Sir William Burrell (1861-1958) is famous for the magnificent Burrell Collection in Glasgow, gifted to the city of his birth in 1944. It is less well known that in 1949 he donated part of his extensive collection of paintings and artefacts to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Sir William donated some 300 items including porcelain and antiquities and 50 paintings to Berwick in order to form a small art gallery in the town. Berwick’s Burrell Collection forms the best collection of fine art in any public gallery between the Tyne and the Tweed and is held by Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, part of the Woodhorn Trust.
